Ontario premier threatens to ‘shut off electricity completely’ for US if trade war escalates
“If the United States escalates, I will not hesitate to shut the electricity off completely,” Ford told reporters. “Believe me when I say I do not want to do this, I feel terrible for the American people, because it’s not the American people who started this trade war. It’s one person who’s responsible. That’s President Trump.”
Ontario Premier Doug Ford at a press conference that he would move forward with a 25% surcharge on electricity exports to three US states starting Monday, warning that he will would turn off access if the United States adds new tariffs on Canadian goods.
Ford on Monday said the 25% surcharge “will cost families and businesses” in New York, Minnesota and Michigan and add around “$100 per month to the bills of hardworking Americans.”
But it would also hurt Canada’s energy industry, in turn. Canada, which is far more dependent on US exports than America is on Canadian goods, risks plunging into a recession if the trade war escalates. As the saying goes: no one wins in a trade war.

Re: Ontario premier threatens to ‘shut off electricity completely’ for US if trade war escalates
President Trump announces several actions in response to Ontario, Canada, imposing a 25% tariff on electricity exported to the United States:
He has instructed the Secretary of Commerce to impose an additional 25% tariff (bringing the total to 50%) on all steel and aluminum imported from Canada, effective March 12, 2025.
He demands that Canada immediately eliminate their 250% to 390% tariffs on various U.S. dairy products.
He plans to declare a National Emergency on Electricity in the affected area to address the perceived threat from Canada.
If Canada does not remove other long-standing tariffs, he threatens to significantly increase tariffs on Canadian cars entering the U.S. starting April 2, 2025, potentially shutting down Canada's automobile manufacturing industry.
He criticizes Canada for relying on the U.S. for military protection while paying little for national security, claiming the U.S. subsidizes Canada by over $200 billion annually.
He proposes that Canada become the 51st state of the United States, arguing that this would eliminate tariffs, reduce Canadian taxes, enhance security, and remove the northern border, creating a larger, stronger nation while preserving Canada's anthem "O Canada" as a state anthem.
