President Donald J. Trump fired Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) Commissioner Christopher Hanson

Bericht door noumoe »

President Donald J. Trump fired Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) Commissioner Christopher Hanson as part of a broader push to reform federal agencies and align them with his administration’s goals. Hanson, who was appointed to the NRC by Trump in 2020 and later named chairman by President Joe Biden in 2021, received an email from White House Deputy Director of Presidential Personnel Trent Morse stating: “On behalf of President Donald J. Trump, I am writing to inform you that your position as Commissioner of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission is terminated effective immediately. Thank you for your service.” The termination, effective June 13, 2025, underscores Trump’s ongoing efforts to reshape independent agencies.

White House spokesperson Anna Kelly defended the decision, stating, “All organizations are more effective when leaders are rowing in the same direction,” and emphasized that Trump “reserves the right to remove employees within his own Executive Branch who exert his executive authority.” The move follows a May 23, 2025, executive order mandating comprehensive NRC reforms, including an 18-month timeline for nuclear reactor licensing decisions, a revision of safety regulations in coordination with the White House Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs and the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), and potential staff reorganization.
