Dr. Fiona Havers, a senior scientist at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention who oversaw respiratory virus surveillance, has resigned from her position following changes to federal vaccine policy under Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Havers, who led CDC surveillance of hospitalizations for coronavirus and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), cited concerns about the scientific rigor of future vaccine policy decisions in her departure.

In an email to colleagues obtained by media outlets, Havers stated she "no longer [has] confidence that these data will be used objectively or evaluated with appropriate scientific rigor to make evidence-based vaccine policy decisions." The infectious diseases physician had worked at the CDC for 13 years and regularly presented hospitalization data at meetings of the agency's vaccine advisory committee.
