Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi’s helicopter suffered a hard landing Sunday in a remote area, according to Iranian state TV, which added that rescue teams are being deployed to the site.
Reuters reported in the hours following the breaking news that an Iranian official told the news agency that the “lives of President Raisi and Foreign Minister Amirabdollahian are at risk following the helicopter crash.”
Reuters initially reported on the confusion surrounding the event, writing that “Iranian media provided contradictory reports about the incident and there has been no official confirmation yet.” Iran’s interior minister soon after confirmed the news on state TV and noted that weather conditions were hindering the search and rescue operation and that they were awaiting further details. Iran’s foreign minister was also aboard the helicopter, which was returning the leaders from a meeting with the president of Azerbaijan.
The Associated Press reported, “Raisi was traveling in Iran’s East Azerbaijan province. State TV said the incident happened near Jolfa, a city on the border with the nation of Azerbaijan, some 600 kilometers (375 miles) northwest of the Iranian capital, Tehran.”
“Rescuers were attempting to reach the site, state TV said, but had been hampered by poor weather conditions. There had been heavy rain and fog reported with some wind. IRNA called the area a ‘forest,’” AP added.
