Re: Pope Francis will be admitted to the Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic hospital
Doctors have had to change treatment for Pope Francis' respiratory tract infection to tackle a "complex clinical situation" and he will remain in hospital for as long as necessary, the Vatican said on Monday.
"The results of the tests carried out in recent days and today have demonstrated a polymicrobial infection of the respiratory tract, which has led to a further modification of the therapy," a brief statement said.
"All tests conducted up to today are indicative of a complex clinical picture that will require an appropriate hospital stay," it said.
The 88-year-old pontiff has been suffering from a respiratory infection for more than a week and was admitted to Rome's Gemelli hospital on Friday.
Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni said the pontiff was "in good spirits". He did not specify whether the pope was suffering from a bacterial or viral infection, but said a further update on the pope's condition would be issued later on Monday.

Pope Francis has at this point spent over a week in the hospital in Rome, battling pneumonia in both lungs, and in the last 24-hours there have been reports that his condition is stable and has seen slight improvement.
The 88-year old Pontiff entered the hospital on Feb. 14 with worsening bronchitis, leading doctors to eventually diagnose pneumonia, and reports in the initial days were dire.
Satriano described that he is awake, eating, and doing some work from his hospital bed, and that blood tests show slight improvements in his inflammation levels. The official Vatican assessment as of Thursday night is that Francis' condition is "slightly improving" that he's free of fever.
Still, the severity of the episode has led to speculation over possible resignation:

Pope Francis is currently on a ventilator:
His medical team reacted by placing Francis on a ventilator with a mask, and said that based on measurements of oxygen in his blood he had responded well to that treatment. "The Pope remained alert and oriented at all times," the Vatican press office statement said, "collaborating in the therapeutic maneuvers."
