World's highest solar thermal power plant completes mirror installation

The world's highest-altitude solar thermal power plant in Amdo county, Xizang, has installed 15,927 mirrors, a key step toward grid connection later this year. This 100-megawatt facility, built by Xizang Development Investment Group, is part of a broader 750MW solar initiative under the region's 14th Five-Year Plan.


The site enjoys over 2,800 hours of sunshine annually. The mirrors focus sunlight on a central tower, heating molten salt to 560°C to generate electricity.


The project aims to produce about 255 million kilowatt-hours of electricity yearly, cutting carbon emissions by 165,000 tons. Advanced technology and intelligent control systems address challenges from extreme plateau conditions. Grid connection is targeted for October.
